Rhythmic cuba – a roadtrip through music, color and culture

Oh Cuba! What a fascinating country. A Cuba roadtrip is one of the most unforgettable ways to experience the island’s vibrant culture, colorful towns, and scenic coastlines.

When to Go

The best time to visit Cuba is from November to April, when the weather is cooler and drier. ☀️

Religion

The most prevalent is Catholicism.

Getting there

We flew from our home town to La Habana. 🛬

la habana

We’ve landed in La Habana and tried to get transportation to our Airbnb. After a bit we were able to catch a bus to the town. There are lots of taxis at the airport, but they are really expensive. We arrived at the end of the day to our accommodation and our lovely Airbnb hostess took us around town and then for dinner. This is such a beautiful city! Some of the buildings were already restored, giving it a picturesque atmosphere. I couldn’t help. but imagine what it would look like if all the constructions were restored – stunning! The woman guiding us also warned us we should be careful when strolling around town and passing under balconies, as they could fall! 😅

After dinner, we went back to our Airbnb and prepared for more exploring on the next day.

In the morning we had breakfast in our accommodation, and what a great meal! All home prepared, a natural juice, a great way to start the day! ☕️

We had the whole day to explore the city, we started by walking around old town, which is a wonderful thing to do! You get to see those classic cars, people just walking around, others playing instruments, there’s a really nice vibe. 😊

We also booked a tour in a classic car, it’s nice to talk with a local, get to know a bit more of the history and see more of La Habana then the old town.

Life is not easy in Cuba, food is rationed, gas is lacking and people are a bit afraid to talk. Luckily nowadays, people can make an income with their own restaurants and also with Airbnb, which is great!

Where to Stay

We’ve stayed in a lovely Airbnb with a really nice and helpful host! It was located right in the middle of La Habana, with nice and big bedrooms in one of those old style, high ceiling and big windows, building.

Where to Eat

The day we arrived we had dinner on a cafe in a corner, with lots of music and dancing, Cuban style! There was even an older lady dancing outside, it was super fun!

The following day, after breakfast we went exploring!

Viñales

On the next day we got up and had breakfast on our Airbnb (their guava juice is amazing! 🤤). Afterwards, we went to get our rented car. There was a line and it took quiet a while for us to get our car. When we went there (2023) there were many issues due to the embargo imposed by the US. Fuel was limited and we were a bit afraid we couldn’t get it, and so were the other travelers renting cars! But on we went! 🚙

Viñales is a really traditional place, where time seems to have stopped! A really calm place, with simple bars, and at night it turns into a vibrant place with great Cuban dancers! Our accomodation was lovely, and so was our host. We had dinner in the house and again the breakfast was great. On the next day we scheduled a tour to go visit the mountains area. There was a horse carriage waiting for us at the door, and another couple who were staying in the same house were also going. We obviously refused to go on the carriage and the other couple followed our advice. We went on foot and it was not far at all.
